Friday Night Live Program

Increase the number of chapters participating in the Friday Night Live program by two every year by June 30, 2020.

Why is this important?

Underage drinking can lead many youth to engage in risky behaviors. Teen pregnancy, suicide, academic failure and car accidents are some consequences of underage drinking. Encouraging and empowering young people to take action and to work with community partners is one way to address this public health issue.

What are we working on?

Youth are constantly bombarded with media messages that promote alcohol consumption. Friday Night Live (FNL) forms partnerships with young people to change perceived norms, develop polices and educate and engage their peers and communities to take action in reducing underage drinking. This is done through youth-led programs that are designed to promote youth development and engage young people in activities that promote healthy lifestyles in the communities they live. Our staff works directly with several schools to support these activities.
Chapters are established youth-led groups in schools. The FNL chapter is high school-age youth working in partnership with adults. The Club Live chapter is middle school-age youth working in partnership with adults.

How are we doing?

The goal is to increase the number of chapters by two each school year. In the 2017-18 fiscal year, we had a total of 26 chapters and dropped to 24 for the 2018-19 fiscal year. In the 2019-20 fiscal year, the total amount of chapters grew to 30. The fluctuations that occur in the total amount of chapters participating in FNL can be due to outside factors, such as changes within the school administration or adviser priority shifts. Although the school may not formally participate in FNL, staff continues to work with the school to maintain the partnership and provide FNL services.

What can you do?

It is not enough to only tell our youth not to drink. Instead, we have to address the environmental elements that are promoting underage drinking and diminishing the bright futures of our youth, families and communities.
